Scope and Content Wide dockside with cobbled surface, large iron bollards along the edge and paddle steamers tied up. Gangplank lying in the foreground. People embarking on to the nearer ship up a gangplank. Near ship the "Mercury" has open upper decks crowded with passengers sitting on benches, lifeboats hanging in the davits, a wheelhouse before the single funnel and two masts. Fishing boat beyond and Cunard liner in background. The "Mercury", 621 tons, was built in 1934 for the LMS Railway, and served as a minesweeper in World War II from 1939 to 25 December 1940 when she was hit. Ship in background is either the "Andaria" or the "Ausonia", 13,900 tons and built in 1922.
