Description Clachan Sound and Bridge, Clachan Seil, Argyll

Date 1/1/1936 to 31/12/1936

Collection Records of the Scottish Cultural Resources Access Network (SCRAN), Edinburgh, Scotland

Catalogue Number DP 447462

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content High single arched stone bridge crossing a narrow boulder strewn channel. The road sweeps over the bridge linking the island with the mainland. Indented loch shoreline with hills in the distance. It is the only bridge which spans the Atlantic. Rough moorland with ruined building on left shore. Car on road beside whitewashed houses and field on right shore. Sparse trees at foot of craggy hill beyond. The Clachan bridge, also known as The Atlantic Bridge, was built in 1791 and reportedly designed by Thomas Telford (1757-1834), though more recent research suggests that it was designed instead by John Stevenson (and the RIAS lists Stevenson as the designer). It connects the island of Seil with the mainland and carries the Easdale to Kilninver road.
