Scope and Content Road cut into a steep hillside above a lighthouse with associated buildings and a partly flooded landing stage. The lighthouse consists of a group of whitewashed buildings, some with crow stepped gables, clustered round the base of a tall harled tower. The tower has a walkway and a light at the top. The lighthouse is sited on the shores of a broad river with steamers plying upstream. There is a long ridge with woods and scattered houses along the shore across the firth. The lighthouse was built in 1797 and has a circular tower 76 feet high. The vessel is one of the Clyde Navigation Trust's once numerous fleet of hopper barges which took the spoil from the bucket dredgers down to Garrioch Head for dumping. The last of these "hoppers" were the steam driven Hoppers 25 & 26, and the diesel powered Hoppers 27 & 28 which served the bucket dredger Blythswood into the late seventies and some time later.
