Scope and Content Pasture with hedgerows before a ruined church and buildings set amid trees rising above a drystone wall, with remaining walls standing to roof height; cultivated hillside beyond. Recessed Gothic nave arches and crossing pillars, Norman windows in the choir. Gravestones visible through the arches. A Cistercian abbey founded 1142 by King David or Fergus, Lord of Galloway, and where Queen Mary rested before exile to England in 1568, and from where she wrote to Queen Elizabeth I asking for sanctuary. From 1606 the property of Lord Annandale.
