Scope and Content People alighting from a small rowing boat at the entrance to tall narrow cave formed in rock of hexagonal column formation. Path with handrail on left side of the cavern and people walking down to boat. Paddle steamer waiting out at sea and low island in distance. This is the largest of the caves on Staffa and has long been a tourist attraction and source of artistic inspiration as in Mendelssohn's Fingal's Cave Overture (1832). Geological formation caused by basalt slowly cooling in the magma chamber of a volcano, forming hexagonal columns in centre and homogeneous rock on the edges.
