Scope and Content Weathered gravestones in a walled burial ground, flat stones within railed enclosures, with remains of a small chapel at mid centre. Ruined church with tower over crossing of nave, transepts and choir. Oldest Christian burial place in Scotland, containing the graves of many kings and island chieftains. The first religious community was founded by St Columba in 563. The remains of the 16th century cathedral of the Isles were given to the Church of Scotland in 1899 and restored. In 1938 the Iona Cathedral Trust was set up and the buildings given to the Iona Community for the use of all Christians.
