Description Ferniehirst Castle Youth Hostel near Jedburgh

Date 1/1/1935 to 31/12/1935

Collection Records of the Scottish Cultural Resources Access Network (SCRAN), Edinburgh, Scotland

Catalogue Number DP 447353

Scope and Content Two cyclists on the lawn before the entrance tower of a castle keep, with crests above the doorway, and gun ports below the turret windows; a lattice fence around the lawn. The castle was a border stronghold of the Kerrs from the 15th century, fell to the English forces in 1523, was restored to the family in 1549, destroyed by the Earl of Sussex in retaliation for an attempt to free Mary, Queen of Scots, and rebuilt in 1598. The Youth Hostel Association was founded in 1909 by a German school teacher Richard Schirrmann, and became popular with young travellers as it provided cheap basic accommodation.
