Scope and Content Inscribed stone on steeple of Tain Tolbooth, Highland Tain Tolbooth was built using a grant of 500 merks from the Convention of Royal Burghs, supplemented by voluntary collections from many Scottish churches. It replaced a 17th-century tolbooth which was in disrepair and suffering from severe storm-damage. This is one of two inscribed stones from the earlier tolbooth built into the north-east face of the spire. Together they commemorate work begun in 1631 when John Mackulloche was the provost. The first stone reads: THIS NEV WARK BIGIT 1631 IHON MACKULLOCHE BEING PROVOST. The second stone is damaged and only the word 'BAILZIES' survives. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
