Scope and Content A ruined castle with a corner tower, arched entrance and several chimney stacks, sited on rising ground, with a meadow in the foreground, trees and hills in the background. Balvenie Castle is a 13th century fortress which was a stronghold of the Comyns. It originally had a moat and was rebuilt in the 15th and 16th centuries. The castle was given the addition of a tower house by the 4th Earl of Atholl. Edward I stayed in Balvenie castle in 1304, Mary Queen of Scots paid a visit there in 1562, and in 1746 the Duke of Cumberland and his army occupied the place.
