Scope and Content A large cannon on a four wheeled wooden carriage, Mons Meg is sited on the castle ramparts. There are wide wooden wheels with iron tyres, and hooks for recoil chains, on the rear of the carriage, and an inscription on side of the carriage. Mons Meg is a 15th century gun of formidable power, possibly made at Mons in Flanders in 1449 by Johan Cambier and gifted by Philip of Burgundy to James II, his nephew by marriage, in 1457. It was used in 1497 at the siege of Norham Castle by King James IV, the gun burst in 1682 while firing a salute for the Duke of York. Taken to the Tower of London in 1754, it was returned to Edinburgh Castle in 1829 after a petition by Sir Walter Scott.
