The Mason's and 'Prentice' Pillars are behind the altar. The 'Prentice' Pillar is very elaborate, legend has it that it was made by an apprentice stonemason when his master mason was away, when the master saw it he was jealous and killed the apprentice. The chapel was founded in 1446 by Sir William Sinclair, 3rd Earl of Orkney, and was made a collegiate in 1521. The Sinclair family is said to have been buried there in full armour until 1650. The Chapel is reputed to be associated with the Templars.
