Scope and Content The ruins of a once substantial castle rising above the woodland grove at mid distance. A 14th to 16th century fortified mansion which was re-roofed ca.1830 to prevent further deterioration. The castle was the seat of Lord Elcho, Earl of Wemyss and March, who fought against the Duke of Montrose at the Battle of Tibbermore; the title dates from 1633. The castle is sited near to that of an earlier stronghold frequented by Sir William Wallace.
