Scope and Content City park with flowerbeds in bloom and trees lining pathway and road above, with temple-style monument dominating the skyline. City buildings on Princes Street are glimpsed through trees. The Scott Monument, erected 1840-44, was built in the Gothic style after designs by stonemason and self-taught architect, George Meikle Kemp. The structure houses a marble statue of Walter Scott and his dog Maida, by Sir John Steell, put in place in 1846. Sir Walter Scott (1771-1832) Scottish romantic novelist and poet.
