Scope and Content A highly ornate hilltop tower with a "crown steeple", and the statue of a knight with sword raised, lower right. Sir William Wallace (ca. 1272-1305) Scottish patriot, seen in battledress of chain mail and helmet, and with his famous two-handed sword, which is housed in the monument. William Wallace is one of Scotland's most famous historical figures. He fought for Scotland's independence over 700 years ago, leading his army in raids on English forces and in major battles at Stirling Bridge and Falkirk. He was eventually captured and taken to London where he was executed in a brutal manner by King Edward I "Longshanks". Wallace's brave struggle has been an inspiration to many over the years and his refusal to give up in the face of overwhelming odds has assured his place in the hearts and minds of Scots the world over. The monument is sited on Abbey Craig, around which Sir William Wallace and his men camped in 1297 before the Battle of Stirling Bridge. Abbey Craig is about 2 miles north of Stirling. This magnificent building can be seen for miles around and forms one of the most impressive sights in Scotland. The tower is so well situated that it seems to form part of the natural landscape. The 220ft high stone structure had a difficult construction, with money being the major problem (the monument was funded completely by public subscription). The foundation stone was laid in 1861, on Bannockburn Day, but the rest of the building took 8 years to complete, until it was finally opened in 1869 on the 11th September - the same date as the famous Battle of Stirling Bridge which took place on the land below it.
