Scope and Content Swans swim in the moat around Rothesay Castle on the island of Bute. The castle is one of the best preserved castles of its period. The castle dates from the 12th and 13th centuries with 16th century additions. Once ruined, it was partly rebuilt between 1872 and 1879 by the Marquis of Bute.
