Scope and Content View of the Italian Chapel and the statue of St George on the island of Lamb Holm in Orkney. The chapel consists of two Nissen huts placed to end-to-end. It was constructed with great ingenuity and improvisation largely from materials salvaged from the sea. The west or entrance front of the chapel is oriented east-west in keeping with medieval ecclesiastical tradition. All the effects in the interior of the Italian Chapel were created with paint. Between 1942 and 1944 over 1,000 Italian prisoners of war being held in Orkney were engaged in the construction of the Churchill Barriers. During their stay, the Italian prisoners of Camp 60 on Lamb Holm decided to build a chapel. It was designed by Domenico Chiocchetti, an artist and church decorator in peacetime. The chapel was dedicated to Regina Pacis, the Queen of Peace.
