Scope and Content A view of Lairg Dam across Loch Shin. The Dam was built by the Scottish Hydro Electric Company between 1954 and 1958. It raised the level of Loch Shin by 11 metres and created a small loch below it, known as Little Loch Shin. The water from Little Loch Shin is fed via an underground tunnel to the turbines of the Shin Power station, part of the Shin Hydro-Electric Power Scheme. The dam is 427 metres long, is located 93 metres above sea level and has a gross head height of 10 metres. A 3.5MW remotely controlled power station (Lairg Power Station) driven by a vertical Kaplan turbine is built into the dam.
