Scope and Content The Peace Camp at Gare Loch was established in 1982 to oppose the siting of Trident nuclear submarines at the nearby Faslane Naval Base in Argyll and Bute. At its inception there were two camps, one broadly socialist and one broadly anarchist. Today there is one camp, with electricity, running water and telephones. Its occupants stage regular demonstrations against nuclear weapons, and occasionally blockade or breach the base itself. There have been over 400 arrests made since the camp began. Gare Loch itself is a sea loch just north of Helensburgh. It is 10 km long. At its southern end it opens into the Firth of Clyde through the Rhu narrows.
