Scope and Content The Conon Hydro-Electric scheme was developed in three stages between 1946 and 1961. It comprises six power stations, Achanalt, Grudie Bridge, Mossford, Luichart, Torrin and Torr Achilty, which are fed by a complex of interconnected lochs and reservoirs including Loch Glascarnoch, Loch Luichart and Loch Fannich. The flow of water is regulated by a number of man-made dams and tunnels, and this collection of images documents the scheme. It is one of a series recording the eight major hydro-electric schemes in Scotland. The Hydro Electric Development (Scotland) Act of 1943 led to the construction of major hydro-electric schemes across Scotland. The scheme was the work of the North of Scotland Hydro-Electric Board under Tom Johnston (1881-1965), the Secretary of State for Scotland in Churchill's wartime coalition government.
