Scope and Content Sign with information about the Wade military road over the Corrieyairack Pass. Field Marshall George Wade - known as 'General Wade' - was born in Ireland in 1673. He is best remembered for the military roads which he constructed. These roads connected military garrisons across the Highlands. Between 1726 and 1740 Wade oversaw the construction of over 250 miles of roads and 40 bridges. His aim was to make it easier to marshall troops and military equipment in times of emergency - a plan to weaken Jacobite support, particularly after the 1715 Jacobite Rebellion. His road system, however, proved very beneficial to Bonnie Prince Charlie during the 1745 Jacobite Rebellion.
