Scope and Content View over Prestonpans, the scene of The Battle of Prestonpans on 21st September 1745. In 2004 the scene was dominated by the Cockenzie Power Station which was closed in 2013. The battle was reputed to have taken place at what is now a brown field site. The insert is the Commemorative Cairn of the Battle which is nearby. Prince Charles Edward Stuart and his Jacobite followers led by General George Murray won a significant victory over the government Redcoat army of the Hanoverian George II led by General Sir John Cope. The Battle began with about 2,500 men in both armies, of whom 500 Hanoverians died, and less than 50 Jacobites. The battle was initially known as the Battle of Gladsmuir but was fought at Prestonpans, East Lothian, on the town's borders with Tranent, Cockenzie and Port Seton. The victory was a huge morale boost for the Jacobites.
