Scope and Content Torre del Mangia, in Piazza del Campo, Siena (1348). This tower stands 88m (289 ft) with 3m (10ft) thick walls and is adjacent to the Palazzo Pubblico, the town council building. The Campo or square in front of this tower hosts the famous, annual Palio or horse-racing events in which the various quarters or 'contrade' of the city compete.
