A private museum located in the desert, about 20 km from Doha, the Sheikh Faisal Museum was opened by Sheikh Faisal Bin Qassim Al-Thani to house and display his 30,000 treasures collected from around the world. These include swords and weaponry, ceramics, jewellery, transport, artworks and textiles. The Sheikh was born in 1948 in Doha and started collecting antiques in the 1960s. The building style is typical of traditional Qatari architecture, with turrets at each corner and it was constructed using local Samariyah stone. It was opened to the public in 2002.
