Scope and Content Malling Roman fort and temporary camps, Stirling Aerial reconnaissance in 1968 discovered cropmarks of a Roman fort on the west shore of the Lake of Menteith. The fort and camps are part of the Flavian (later 1st century AD) occupation of Scotland. Whilst no internal features can be made out the outline of the ditches the fort is clear. An annexe extends E from the fort to the lakeside. On either side of the fort there are two temporary camps, visible as thin, dark marks, Malling is one of a series of forts built along the southern edge of the Highlands to protect the northern boundary of the Roman province.
