Sketch showing view of ruined church, possibly Aamos Church, Weisdale.

DP 418386

Description Sketch showing view of ruined church, possibly Aamos Church, Weisdale.

Date 8/1801

Collection Records of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland, Edinburgh, Scotland

Catalogue Number DP 418386

Category On-line Digital Images

Copy of DC 53080

Scope and Content Drawing in sketchbook made during a tour of Orkney and Shetland in August 1801, likely by James Skene of Rubislaw. Page 16: view titled 'Weisdale Walls - Sandsound, ruins of a Roman Catholic Chapel Aug 1801'. In pencil annotated [?St Mary's Chapel, Sand, Sandsting]. The window in the E gable is, however, clearly shown as pointed, whereas St Mary's Chapel, Sand, has a rounded arch to the window, and the coastline does not match, even allowing for exaggeration. Brian Smith, Shetland Archivist, suggests that it may be the former Aamos Church in Weisdale. Thatched cottage with a lum on the right, figures and boats at the shore.
