Scope and Content Royal Bank of Scotland, formerly Dundas House, St Andrew Square, Edinburgh Detail of the forecourt railing Dundas House, occupying a prominent site on the east side of St Andrew Square, has been the headquarters of the Royal Bank of Scotland since 1825. The house was built in 1774 for the wealthy Sir Laurence Dundas. The heavy cast iron railings and gates separating the forecourt of the house from St Andrew Square were made at Anderson's Leith Walk Foundry in 1827. The lamp-standards, cast at Shotts, were made in the following year. In 1767, Sir Lawrence Dundas feued from the city of Edinburgh 'an area of the east square', the proposed site for St. Andrew's Church, on which he had 'the finest house in the New Town', built by Sir William Chambers.
