Scope and Content Fordell's Lodging, 18 Church Street, Inverkeithing, Fife Fordell's Lodging was built between 1666, when Sir John Henderson of Fordell acquired the plot, and 1671 when its name appears in the records. Its architectural features were used as inspiration by 19th-century Scots Baronialists. The turret overhangs the corner on corbels The top-floor windows are dormers, meaning that they project through part of the roof. The masonry is of rubble and was originally harled except for its dressings - the corner-stones and window surrounds. Most Scottish masonry from the Middle Ages to the 18th century was harled - covered with rough-cast cement to protect it from the weather. This would probably have been painted using locally available pigments. The results could be quite colourful. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
