Scope and Content View of James Street Hall, 4 James Street, Dunfermline, Fife Dunfermline was created a royal burgh between 1124 and 1127 by David I, and grew up around the 12th-century abbey and royal residence. It became a centre for linen manufacture in the 18th and 19th centuries. James Street Hall is one of many churches and chapels serving Dunfermline's various congregations. Built in 1834 as a Baptist chapel, it became a Mission Hall when Viewfield Baptist Church was built in 1882-4 to accommodate a larger congregation. This shows the main entrance front to the hall. A single-storeyed three-bayed building, it has a slightly recessed doorway under a segmental arch reached by a short flight of steps. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
