Scope and Content Fortrose Academy, Academy Street, Fortrose, Highland Fortrose began as a settlement belonging to the canons of Fortrose Cathedral. It became a royal burgh in 1590, but in 1691 was said to be still a 'little village'. By the later 19th century, the town was an established holiday resort. Fortrose Academy was built in 1890 by John Robertson and extended (right) in 1972. The tall round tower (left) is of a type associated with early Christian structures in Ireland and Scotland.
