Scope and Content View of staircase on ground floor at Stonefield Castle Hotel, Argyll and Bute Stonefield Castle, a mansion in Scots Baronial style, is sited on the west shore of Loch Fyne. It was designed by William Henry Playfair (1790-1857) and built 1836-40 for John Campbell of Stonefield. The house is now in use as an hotel. The principal staircase is of a scale-and-platt, or dog-leg style. It has stone treads with a timber balustrade, and pendant newels at the end of each flight. There is a panelled dado. Lit by a double window, the stair hall has a ribbed ceiling. Much of the decoration of the main apartments is of 17th- and 18th- century style. For example, the door surrounds have boldly projecting bolection mouldings. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
