Scope and Content Corn Exchange, St Catherine Street, Cupar, Fife The Corn Exchange was built in 1861-2 by Campbell Douglas and Stevenson to provide a place where farmers and dealers could buy and sell corn. The Victorian Gothic style makes the building look like a church. This was probably a deliberate attempt to make the Exchange seem as important and as grand as possible since the corn trade was central to Cupar's economy. Gothic architecture, the distinctive pointed-arched style of the later Middle Ages, was revived in the late 18th century. It remained popular for public buildings, especially churches, well into the 20th century. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
