Scope and Content Mercat Cross, High Street, Dingwall, Highlands Dingwall, despite being the county town of Ross and Cromarty, remained small with little trade until its harbour was built in 1815-17. Connection to the rail network in 1862 fuelled further expansion. The town-centre was redeveloped in 1963. The Mercat Cross dates from about 1600. This photograph shows it before it in 1975, ten years before it was re-sited in front of the museum. To the right is an ancient yett - a gate made of inter-woven wrought-iron bars.
