North facade, detail of heraldic plaque

SC 2510803

Description North facade, detail of heraldic plaque

Date 8/5/1990

Catalogue Number SC 2510803

Category On-line Digital Images

Copy of B 39441

Scope and Content Wemyss Family arms on steeple of West Wemyss Tolbooth, Fife West Wemyss Tolbooth probably replaced an earlier building serving the burgh of barony. An inscription in the steeple's south wall once read: THIS FABRIC WAS BUILT BY EARL DAVID WEMYSS & TOWN FOR THE CRIBBING OF VICE AND SERVICE TO THE CROWN. The heraldic plaque in the steeple's north wall bears the Wemyss family arms and the initials 'E DW' for 'Earl David Wemyss'. This, along with the inscription on the steeple's south wall, probably refers to the 3rd Earl who died in 1720. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
