An inscription in the steeple's south wall once read: THIS FABRIC WAS BUILT BY EARL DAVID WEMYSS & TOWN FOR THE CRIBBING OF VICE AND SERVICE TO THE CROWN. Two blocked doorways in the pend originally gave access to vaulted cells. The rebuilt roof of the main block incorporates ships' timbers and is pantiled. The steeple roof was originally slated but is now covered with copper. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
