Scope and Content View from south showing Conon Bridge, Highland The village of Conon Bridge lies c.15km north-west of Inverness and takes its name from the bridge over the River Conon designed by Thomas Telford in 1806-9. The village was first laid out in 1829 but has expanded greatly during the 20th century. This shows the south elevation of Conon Bridge. It has five arches which increase in height and span towards the middle of the bridge. Telford (1757-1834) designed many bridges, churches and manses in the Highlands during the early to mid-19th century. The bridge was demolished and a new road bridge built by James Arrol in 1969, evidently because Telford's bridge was considered unsuitable for modern traffic. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
