Scope and Content Fort and settlement at Inveresk, East Lothian This Roman fort and civilian settlement are at Inveresk. The presence of Roman remains was first noted in 1565 when parts of an altar were found. The main fort, built during the Antonine period (2nd century AD), was located in the late 1940s. This is a view of a section of the hypocaust at Inveresk House. This was first reported in 1783. The hypocaust itself is represented by four pillars supporting a section of concrete floor. The plan of the room can be partially seen from the walls behind. The site was first excavated in the 1940s, 1970s and the 1990s. It is the most extensive and best preserved Roman settlement in Scotland. There appears to be at least two phases of occupation. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
