Scope and Content PultneyAcademy (now Assembly rooms), Sinclair Terrace, Wick Wick, a royal burgh since 1589, remained a small town until after 1801 when Thomas Telford planned the harbour and new town on behalf of the British Fisheries Society. By the middle of the 19th century, Wick was Europe's largest herring port. Pultney Academy (now the Assembly rooms) was built in the late 19th century in Scots Jacobean style. It was extended to the west some time between 1919 and 1939. Jacobean, based on early 17th-century architecture, was one of the 'national' styles that became popular in the 19th century because they reflected local, rather than Classical, architectural traditions.
