Scope and Content Mains of Applecross Farm, Applecross, Highland Mains of Applecross Farm is a late 18th- to mid-19th-century steading with three notable vernacular barns incorporating wattle and heather thatch and showing strong Hebridean influences in their walling. The steading was formerly called Borrodale and is situated close to the mid-18th-century Applecross House, built for the Mackenzies of Applecross. This shows part of the mid-19th-century steading, which was of a U-plan, single-storeyed and known as an 'attic' farm steading. The free-standing, five-bayed block in the centre of the U can be seen here. It has a central gabled bay with a small attic window and a small polygonal cupola with leaded ogee window and a fish weathervane resting on the ridge of the roof. All the buildings are harled and whitewashed, and the flanking wings have chimney-stacks on their gables. The interior of the square has been much altered, including the removal of the mill-wheel from the north gable wall. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
