Scope and Content Douglas Arms on mercat cross, Inverkeithing, Fife Inverkeithing became a royal burgh in the 12th century. Its economy was based on trade. A new distillery and ironworks saved it from decline in the late 18th century. Its key 20th-century industries were papermaking and ship-building and breaking. The shield has a lion on one side and five 'bars wavy' on the other to represent Robert III and his wife - one of four heraldic shields possibly marking the wedding of King Robert III's heir, David, Duke of Rothesay to Mary Douglas in 1398.
