Scope and Content St Kentigern's House, Culross, Fife St Kentigern's House was built in the early 19th century. Its fashionable classical design suggests that its owner was prosperous, despite the fact that Culross was in economic decline. The flattened columns at the house's corners are known as angle-pilasters. By the late 19th-century, Culross was 'a mere skeleton of an ancient town'. Its coal mine had been flooded in 1625, while its iron scone-girdle industry had been damaged by loss of monopoly in 1727and then killed off by competition from Carron Ironworks.
