Scope and Content First pair of millstones, Golspie Mill, Golspie, Highland Golspie Mill was built c.1810, and is one of two mills on the site which belonged to the Duke of Sutherland in the 1870s. Golspie Mill is a large, three-storeyed, five-bayed building constructed from dressed sandstone. Three pairs of millstones within the mill are still in use, and are powered by an overshot waterwheel (water is channelled to hit the top of the wheel). This shows a pair of millstones on the first floor of the mill. The stones are contained within covers to prevent the loss of grain. A funnel mounted above the hole in the centre of the stones pours grain between the top moving stone and the fixed lower stone for milling. Golspie Mill was the one of the most important mills in Sutherland. In the late 19th century many small rural mills closed, but the size and efficiency of Golspie insured its survival into the 20th century. Storm damage to the lade in the early 1950s eventually closed the mill, but renewed interest in wholefoods led to its reopening and restoration in the 1990s. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
