Scope and Content Royal Inverness Academy (now Inverness Technical College), Stephen's Street, Inverness, Highland Inverness expanded rapidly in the 19th century following construction of the Caledonian Canal (begun in 1804) and connection to the rail network (1855). Its main industries at that period were ship-building, iron founding and saw-milling. The Royal Inverness Academy was built in 1893-5 by Ross and Macbeth. It was extended in 1911-13 by Robert J Macbeth and in 1968 by Inverness County Council. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
