Description  South elevation

Date c. 1900

Collection Records of the National Art Survey of Scotland, Edinburgh, Scotland

Catalogue Number F 5221

Category Photographs and Off-line Digital Images

Copies SC 798091

Scope and Content Aberdour Castle, Fife, from south-south-east This view from the south-south-east, taken in about 1900, shows the 4th Earl of Morton's addition of c.1570 to the left and the 6th Earl's range of c.1635 to the right. Most of the building is disused and decaying. In the foreground are part of the remains of the south garden, probably laid out in about 1570 as a series of terraces. The original roofs of the c.1635 extension were lowered in pitch, probably in about 1800. It was subsequently given into State care, and is now opened to the public by Historic Scotland. The 17th-century gallery has a painted ceiling. The terraces of the south garden were rebuilt in about 1981. The oldest part of Aberdour Castle is a 14th-century tower on a rhomboidal plan, which was extended to the east in the 16th and 17th centuries. To the south are the remains of a terraced garden, with a beehive dovecot, and to the east of that is a walled garden. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
