Scope and Content Annotated and stamped on the mounted print: 'Scottish National Buildings Record. Shire: Argyll. Place: Inveraray. Building: Carloonan Mill. Photographer: C.H.C. Date: May 1962'. View of mill at Carloonan, Inveraray estate, Argyll and Bute This ruined mill, which incorporates some mid-18th-century masonry may date to 1748, and may have been repaired in 1772 after the spate that destroyed the old Aray Bridge. The 4.4m wheel was on the west wall of the mill, and its impression is seen here. The shaft would have penetrated the main wall through the circular opening. The aperture to the left provided access to the rear of the wheel-rim for maintenance. Situated on the east bank of the River Aray, this mill was used until the last quarter of the 19th century. There had been a mill on the site since 1577, when Archibald, 6th Earl of Argyll, granted the mill and land in a feu-charter to Archibald MacVicar. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
