Scope and Content Bynack Lodge, Glen Bynack, Mar Lodge Estate, Aberdeenshire When the Forest of Mar was returned to its former status as a hunting forest in the mid 19th century, substantial houses were built in a number of glens to accommodate the keepers and to act as lodges for the hunters. The stable block belonging to the Lodge had a timber superstructure set on a stone-built plinth, of which only the stonework survives. It was 9.1m long and 5.1m wide and had three bays for horses. Mar Lodge estate was part of the medieval Earldom of Mar. The Forest of Mar became a hunting reserve in medieval times and was revived as such in the 19th century, after a period of sheep-farming in the 18th and early 19th centuries.
