Scope and Content Gravestone commemorating John Fender, Tranent churchyard, East Lothian This gravestone commemorates John Fender, a stone mason in Seton who died in 1690. Three castles within the oval cartouche symbolise the stonemason's craft. On either side putto, each standing upon a skull, symbolise death and the soul's triumph over death. Beneath, the inscription is bordered by emblems of death, suspended on ribbons. The graveyards of Scotland are an important part of the cultural heritage of the country and can provide fascinating information for people interested in family or local history, as well as vernacular art.
