Administrative History The RIBA was founded in 1834 as the Institute of British Architects, becoming the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) in 1837 when it was awarded a Royal Charter. The RIBA Library, also established in 1834, is one of the three largest architectural libraries in the world and the largest in Europe. The RIBA is responsible for training, technical services, publications and events in the UK and overseas territories and works to promote and defend the architectural profession. The RIBA and its members have had a leading part in the promotion of architectural education in the United Kingdom, including the establishment of the Architects' Registration Council of the United Kingdom (ARCUK) and establishing a Board of Architectural Education to develop a system for the recognition of architectural schools in 1904. The RIBA has been based at 66 Portland Place in London since 1934.
