Scope and Content Sketch by James Skene of Lochmaben 'Old Castle', Dumfries and Galloway This motte, known as Lochmaben Old Castle, is situated on a neck of land between the Kirk Loch and Castle Loch. The de Brus family built it to replace their castle at Annan which collapsed due to river erosion. This sketch, made by the antiquary James Skene, shows the earthen motte at Lochmaben. A wooden tower within a timber palisade would have stood on the top of the motte. During the reign of David I (1124-1153) many Norman nobles, including the de Brus family, received estates across southern Scotland. Motte-and-bailey castles served as symbols of their lordship as well as fortified residences for themselves and retainers. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
