Scope and Content Recorded on the mounted print: 'Scottish National Buildings Record. Shire: Fife. Place: Pittenweem. Building: Brown's Close. Photographer: G.N. Date: April 1964'. Brown's Close, Pittenweem, Fife Pittenweem became a burgh of barony dependent on its Augustinian Priory in the 15th century, and a royal burgh in 1541. Appearing in records in 1228, its port harboured a thriving fishing fleet, and was home to merchants trading with the Low Countries. Later alterations to this house in Brown's Close include the classical door-surround (left) and the blocked ground-floor window (right). The house was probably built in the 17th century and then rebuilt and adapted over the next two centuries. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
