Scope and Content This is a close view of the railway lines going into Inverness Railway Station and the infrastructure of the railways in central Inverness. Inverness Railway Station opened in 1855, but initially the line only went as far as Nairn. The connection with Aberdeen was established in 1858. In 1898 the direct route between Aviemore and Inverness was opened. From 1855 the Lochgorm works was built and developed to provide workshops etc. to support the railway and its rolling stock. The Eastgate Centre is to the left of the railway with Morrison's Supermarket built on the site of the Roundhouse (engine shed) which was demolished in the early 1960s and the auction mart (demolished in the late 1980s).
